title of the project: alteridem.exe_2
author: calin man / kinema ikon

ex abrupto _ who is the author? how can we establish the paternity of a collective work? the theme is of topical interest particularly after the impact of the new digital technologies on the process of artistic creation; a situation exemplarly synthesized by Roy Ascott's syntagm of "distributed authorship". we notice the confusions of signification caused by the quasi-synonymy of some terms. How should we call the work/creation: collective, participative, collaborative or group work? modules 1 and 3 are obviously marked by the style of their author, calin man. module 2 is a kinema ikon group project based on 8 individual essays. structured and displayed together they induce the idea of one collective work dominated by the brand of one artist the proponent of the leading concept and theme. eventually the interactive input of the user aims at the same co-auctorial purpose. and so on.
in this respect, the active-creative role of the user equals that of the initiating artist, but, for the moment, it cannot be spoken about the author's disappearance or the audience's dictatorship. anyway, a conflict between these two creative entities is perceivable, rooted in the qualitative difference of their respective anticipation horizons different projects, different dreams and a different outlook of the work in progress. hence, the option for a balanced designation of the roles, under the form of a non-aggression and co-operation pact, subsequently, theorists and specialized art critics having the task to discern the quality and the rapport of the authorial cast. from this point of view, the alteridem.exe_2 hypermedia installation purports to be a challenge.

module 2. kinema ikon: alteridem.exe
module 3. calin man: net.art_kit

module 1. calin man: Esoth Eric [hypermedia application]
2 computers, 2 monitors, 2 multimedia projectors, 1 screen
the two cd-roms, Esoth Eric and antiEsoth Eric compose the multimedia application Esoth Eric. the two cd-roms can be accessed independently from two computers. the projected images are overlapping on the screen which plays the role of a melting pot from where the alternative results of the equation emerge.
reVoltaire archive is a work in progress |off-line and on-line| developed on a given equation that will have 0, -1 or 1 as a result. the reVoltaire archive files are perceived as elements of the equation. seen as a time line, the equation is not complete so far. for this reason parts of the archive can be accessed on cd-rom or on the net as independent works.
the projects Esoth Eric and antiEsoth Eric, have been developed on the same given equation that has 1, 0 or -1 as a result. the equation can be solved linearly or randomly: Revelator > Esoth Eric: life and work >the elements of equation correspond to the biographemes of the character and can be combined according to the preferences of the user or can be accessed chronologically. the result revealed by the melting pot will always be different. // antiRevelator > antiEsoth Eric: antilife and antiwork > such as the minimal difference between matter & anti-matter makes possible the existence of the world we think to know, any pixel has its anti-pixel. therefore, antiEsoth Eric's existence cannot be overlooked.
Quod Erat Demonstrandum _ according to the convention, everything put in the melting pot will be perceived as an element of the equation. the chosen result will be the logical one or the one given by the computer in a way that does not need to be explained anymore. if x = 0, any affirmation loses its sense. in reality zero is the golden number of hypermedia works. if x = -1, singularities and limits are abandoned and one can speak of the imaginary type where everything is possible. if x = 1, a numeric object is shown, as an effect of organizing, tuning or intentionally covering a sonorous or graphic space. this object, with no precise meaning, is named krestanatz.

module 2. kinema ikon: alteridem.exe [hypermedia application]
2 computers, 2 multimedia projectors, 1 screen
from the two computers (positioned on both sides of the screen), two cd-roms are projected to each side of the screen; one cd-rom contains the eight individual developed by the members of kinema ikon: calin man, George Sabau, Peter Hügel, Caius Grozav, Roxana Chereches, Judit Angel, Ioan Ciorba, Romulus Bucur, Alin Gherman; the other features the group project which is the result from combining the individual essays.
after several individual works, the kinema ikon group has produced in 2002 a collective digital work entitled alteridem.exe [installation, cd-rom, net]. in a first stage eight authors achieved eight individual works, and in the next stage it was continued by a sort of ars combinatoria, resorting to brainstorming tactics, which led to an eclectic work, to be registered under the first heading, that of distributed paternity. finally, the finished work opens again as a project offered to the receivers, stimulated to resort to permutational strategies in order to build new variations, and thus the second paternity situation obtains, which, this time, is redistributed to the users, with full co-auctorial rights. ["al-ter-i-dem = another exactly the same" / exe = "stand alone executable"]

module 3. calin man: net.art_kit [cd-rom, internet]
1 computer, 1 multimedia projector, 1 screen.
as part of reVoltaire archive, the project net.art_kit contains the sum of the hypermedia works in html format. from the main menu various web site stories are accesed off-line. the on-line link [reVoltaire@Venietzsche] is available during the biennial.
reVoltaire's archive features a number of characters with no spectacular biography and lazy above, who motivate their existence only through their name. rarely one of these characters undertakes anything and then the importance of the action can be ignored without any fear.

CCITYV
A project by stanza about the subvergence of surveillance. Selected webcam feeds are collected from cities around the world in real time. These real time images are fed into a software system where a series of specialised channels rework these images. The channels are always on, and always changing, a constant view of world cities changing and evolving around the clock. Uses specially created software and technology to randomly travel the globe and integrate the images from the cameras. People looking at people looking at cities. Works inside include, tormented, bleeding, earthquakes,Stanza creates participatory digital artworks that invite viewers to guide data flows or to simply observe self-generating compositions. His digital paintings shift through abstract and iconic patterns, which people can explore akin to virtual environments. Interactive and visually appealing, his style also maintains the substantive power through multifaceted content. This artists has won international prizes and awards for his new media works that invite collaboration.

Currently the population of the planet is waiting for the launch of a deadly attack by one set of countries on another. the >wartime< project is a collective group effort by digital and network artists across all the continents to focus its visitors and audience on the horror and destructiveness of war.
http://offline.area3.net/wartime/

In the >wartime< project over fifty artists, individuals or groups, organizing through the internet, have contributed pieces meditating on, reflecting on and reacting against wars, past, present and future. A further fifty or so artists are currently registered to contribute to the project in the future.

The project is designed to be visited online and also capable of being shown LIVE in public as a installation or performance show. A calendar of these public events is on the site.

We hope that the reach and diversity of approach, materials, sentiments and location in the component parts of our project demonstrates and reflects the range and scale of opposition to war.

the >wartime< project is a joint initiative of the international digital artists group OFFLINE http://offline.area3.net and South London based digital arts events association open_digi http://club.net-art.ws/

THE PERIFERIC BIENNIAL

The biennial exists since 1997. It is initiated and organized by the Vector Association and its chairman, the artist and university lecturer Matei Bejenaru. The first editions were centered on contemporary performance art. Most of the participating artists came from Romania and neighbouring countries. However, the intention of the organizers was always to create an international contemporary art event in the city of Iasi. This year's edition marked the transition from respected regional festival to aspiring international biennial.

The 6th Periferic Biennial was the most extensive contemporary art initiative in Romania after the fall of communism. The Swedish curator Anders Kreuger, formerly director of the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art (NIFCA) in Helsinki, was the artistic director of the event. He created an exhibition especially for the city of Iasi; an exhibition that cannot be shown anywhere else in its entirety.

PROPHETIC CORNERS

The title of the 6th Periferic Biennial was Prophetic Corners. The exhibition, curated by Anders Kreuger, attempted to explore the concept of "the future" as a category of thinking and creation rather than as a prediction of concrete events. Western culture is dominated by a linear understanding of time. In both grammar and philosophy, the future is traditionally seen as weaker than the present or the past. The future does not yet exist, and therefore we have no information about it. In a culture that privileges information over intuition, the future remains an unknown, a leftover, a dream.

The title was borrowed from a dense little book by Walter Benjamin, A Berlin Childhood Around Nineteen Hundred. This is what Benjamin writes about the Berlin Zoological Garden:

This corner of the Zoological Garden showed signs of something about to come. It was a prophetic corner. Just as some plants are said to have the power of letting us see into the future, there are locations that have the same gift. Mostly, they are deserted plots, but also tree tops facing walls, blind alleys or front gardens where no one ever stops. In such places, everything that really lies ahead of us seems like a past.

Prophetic Corners tried to articulate this idea, that there are locations that "have the power of letting us see into the future". The curator and the artists suggested that the city of Iasi is such a location. A mirage reflection of European history, Iasi is well suited for projections of "the future". It is a former capital city with a developed cultural infrastructure and a laid-back lifestyle. It is also something of a well-kept secret to the rest of the world. Still, in just a few years Iasi will become an important outpost for "New Europe" - the extended European Union and NATO.

PROPHETIC REMIX

The presentation at Kalinderu Medialab contains only some of the works exhibited in Iasi. Still, it brings together a number of artists from different generations and countries. The 6th Periferic Biennial did not have a "geopolitical programme". Its geography and politics were imaginary. Three specific considerations were made, however. This was the first coherent presentation of contemporary art from the Nordic countries in Romania. It was purposely not a Balkan exhibition. Interesting artists in some of the countries surrounding Romania were left out this time. Instead, there was an attempt at reviving the "dormant" historical link between Iasi/ Jassy and Istanbul/ Constantinople.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art inaugurates the exhibition PREVIEW at Kalinderu MediaLab - a selection of works purchased in the last few years, together with interventions by very young artists. We are also presenting a state of fact: a starting point in the evolution of the Museum, in itself a "work in progress". PREVIEW isolates several significant moments in the work of contemporary Romanian artists. Developing the language of new media, experimenting with and innovating visual discourse are tendencies that MNAC will promote, by presenting international exhibitions to the romanian public and also by making its spaces and technical resources available to local and international artists.
KML will become an experimental space. For this preliminary stage, we have chosen a more comprehensive outlook, one that does not bypass painting or installation and does not impose limitations of age or prestige. We are trying to articulate an unprejudiced vision of romanian contemporary art and to offer our public the medium of a profitable interaction with it.
Under the circumstances of a rather conservative reception, Romanian contemporary art needs to attract an informed audience, both locally and internationally. The museum can gel initiatives and trigger emulation, stimulate collaborations between local artists and artists active on the international scene, it can eventually make a functional art system colesce, dispensing with the habitual inertia that hinders so many interesting projects.
MNAC can be the very opportunity to recoup a major cultural handicap.
When the conversion of the exhibition spaces in the Palace of Parliament is completed, the new location will host diverse types of exhibitions, differently structured chronologically and conceptually, from the retrospectives we owe to important artists to curatorial essays, exploring certain segments or topics in the evolution of contemporary art. Our proposal is a flexible cultural policy.
A permanently shifting territory, contemporary art defines itself at the crossroads of disciplines and spheres of experience. Constantly assimilating new concepts and themes, it captures the spirit of our times in hybrid, exciting formulas.
