In 1995, in Strasbourg, a meeting organized with help from the Council of Europe, led to the setting up of the then informal "Centre des Marges" (peripheral centres), which has since become the "Art Centres of Europe" (ACE). These now are part of the Council of Europe's "Cultural Routes" programme. The point is for the participants to discuss the various problems encountered within the particular cultural contexts and geographic areas, in order to think up new ways of cooperation, which would enable dynamic and innovative centres to carry out original large-scale, high-quality projects despite limited means.

Therefore, the directors and curators of spaces such as the Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain (Luxembourg), the International Center for Contemporary Art in Bucharest together with the ArtStudio in Cluj (Romania), the Centrum Sztuki Wspolczesnej "Laznia" in Gdansk (Poland), the Galéria Jána Koniarka in Trnava (Slovakia), the migros museum für gegenwartskunst in Zurich (Switzerland), the O.K Centrum für Gegenwartskunst in Linz (Austria) and the Villa Arson - Centre national d'art contemporain in Nice (France), got together and started the common project Re:Location 1-7 / Shake.

Spread over three years (2002-2004), the project's aims are:

- to experiment or imagine new means of cooperation between art centers from all over Europe;
- to increase and enlarge artistic exchanges, as well to deepen the mutual knowledge of the artistic and cultural contexts within which each art centre operates;
- to set up a joint project of contemporary art in a European context, by intelligently pooling together the human and economic resources of the various partners, while still maintaining the existing differences between each of them.

During the years 2002 and 2003, each partner will organise two bilateral exchanges (Re:Location 1-7) in order to experience the other partners' genuine contexts on the spot. This first phase will serve as a basis for the staging of Re:Location Shake, which will take place in Spring-Summer of 2004. Each partner, enriched by acquired experiences and strengthened by the others' support, will take part in Re:Location Shake, by subjecting themselves to the test in an original way. This second experimental phase is still in progress and will be described more fully in the next newsletters to come out in the Fall of 2003 and in the Spring of 2004.

The informative website www.re-location.org will provide regular information about the ongoing process, as well as links to all the participating institutions.
